How to Care for Sod in the First 30 Days
November 17, 2025

Installing sod is one of the fastest ways to get a beautiful, green lawn. But the success of your new sod doesn’t just depend on installation — the first 30 days are critical. Proper care during this period helps roots establish, prevents dry patches, and ensures your lawn thrives for years.

At W5LC Landscape, we’ve helped countless homeowners install and maintain sod. Here’s what you should do to protect your new investment.

Watering: The Most Important Step

Watering is the key to sod survival in the first month.

  • Days 1–14: Water daily, keeping sod consistently moist but not flooded.
  • Days 15–30: Transition to watering every other day, encouraging deeper root growth.
  • Tip: Morning watering is best, reducing evaporation and disease risk.

Without consistent water, sod can dry out and fail to root.

Avoid Heavy Foot Traffic

For the first few weeks, minimize walking on the sod. Too much weight can prevent roots from attaching to the soil. Encourage kids and pets to stay off until the lawn is established.

Mowing: Timing Matters

Mowing too early can pull up sod before it’s rooted.

  • Wait 2–3 weeks before the first mow.
  • Make sure roots are firmly in place (you shouldn’t be able to lift pieces easily).
  • Keep mower blades sharp and only cut 1/3 of the grass height at a time.

Fertilizing for Growth

Light fertilization in the first month can give sod the nutrients it needs. Stick with a fertilizer designed for new sod to avoid burning young roots.

Watch for Trouble Spots

Check edges, corners, and high-traffic areas often. These sections dry out faster and may need extra water. Addressing them early prevents bare patches.

Long-Term Success Begins Early

The first 30 days set the stage for your sod’s future health. With consistent watering, patience, and proper mowing, your lawn will quickly transition from “new” to “established.”

Even the best aftercare can’t fix poor installation. At W5LC Landscape, we prepare soil, grade for drainage, and install sod properly, giving homeowners the best possible start.
