How to Care for Sod After Installation

Installing sod is the fastest way to achieve a lush, green lawn. But the work doesn’t end on installation day — proper care ensures your new grass establishes strong roots and thrives long-term.

Watering

• First 2 weeks: Water daily to keep sod moist and encourage root growth.
• After 2 weeks: Transition to every other day, then reduce to 2–3 times per week.
• Tip: Water in the morning to prevent disease.

Mowing

Wait at least 2–3 weeks before mowing, allowing sod to root firmly. Use a sharp blade and never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height.

Fertilizing

Fertilize after the first month to promote healthy growth. Stick to products suited for new sod.

Traffic Control

Avoid heavy foot traffic for the first few weeks so roots can establish securely.

Watch for Dry Spots

Check regularly to make sure every section is getting water — especially edges and corners.
